Mesoscale Discussion 0058 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0242 AM CST Mon Jan 28 2019

Areas affected…Southeast WI…Northern IL…Western Lower MI

Concerning…Heavy snow

Valid 280842Z – 281245Z

SUMMARY…Heavy snowfall will continue across southeast WI and northern IL, eventually spreading northeastward into western Lower MI.

DISCUSSION…Heavy snowfall (i.e. +SN and 1/4 mi visibility) has been reported at numerous locations across southeast WI and northern IL during the past few hours. Both RFD and MKE explicitly reported over 1" in the past hour. Expectation is for this heavy snowfall to continue gradually shifting eastward, with the highest snowfall rates occurring along the western edge of the precipitation shield where warm-air advection/frontogenesis is the strongest. Snowfall rates will generally be around 1"/hr but isolated instances of rates of 2"/hr are possible.

Pivoting of this clipper system will result in an eastward/northeastward translation of the elevated frontogenesis over the next few hours with a resulting expansion of the precipitation shield into western Lower MI. Snowfall rates around 1"/hr are possible in this region beginning around 10-11Z.
