This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of North Central Illinois…Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana.

.DAY ONE…Tonight.

Weather hazards expected…

Extreme Excessive cold Risk.  Limited Non thunderstorm wind Risk.  Elevated Snow and Blowing Snow Risk.

DISCUSSION…

Scattered snow showers and strong winds through this evening will produce areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility, with patchy blowing and drifting snow through the night. An extreme cold air mass and continued gusty winds will feature temperatures plummeting to 20 below zero or colder and life-threatening wind chills of 45 to 55 below zero by daybreak Wednesday.

The threat for localized ice jam flooding will continue on area rivers.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Wednesday through Monday.

Wednesday…

Extreme Excessive Cold Risk.  Limited Non Thunderstorm Wind Risk.  Limited Blowing Snow Risk.

Thursday…

Extreme Excessive Cold Risk in the morning.  Elevated Snow Risk.

Friday…

Limited Excessive Cold Risk.

DISCUSSION:

Air temperatures of 20 below zero or colder and wind Wednesday morning will cause life-threatening wind chills of 45 to 60 below zero. Patchy blowing and drifting snow will continue in open areas. Air temperatures will remain in the teens below zero Wednesday afternoon, keeping wind chills at 35 to 45 below zero. Wednesday night into Thursday morning will have the coldest temperatures of this record cold snap, with some locations falling to below 30 below zero. With lighter winds, minimum wind chills will still be in dangerous 35 to 50 below zero range.

Accumulating snow is expected late Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening, with forecast accumulations of about one to three inches likely to cause travel impacts.

Finally, the threat for localized ice jam flooding will continue on area rivers.

Spotter activation will not be necessary through tonight.
