DISCUSSION…

Deep low pressure will lift northeast across the area today. Because of the track of the low, there will be a wide range of temperatures, from 30s across north central Illinois to the 50s across far east central Illinois and northwest Indiana. Freezing rain will persist across parts of northern Illinois this morning before temperatures rise above freezing. Rain and embedded thunderstorms are likely across much of the area through early afternoon. Areas of fog are likely, and some fog may be locally dense. There is a slight risk that a few storms could become severe across southeast parts of the outlook area during the midday or early afternoon hours, mainly southeast of the Interstate 55 corridor. Damaging winds would be the primary threat to these storms, though the threat of isolated hail or an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Very windy conditions will develop behind the departing system this afternoon and tonight, with west winds gusting up to 40 mph at times. Much colder air will return overnight, and combine with the gusty winds to produce wind chills of between 10 below and 20 below zero by Friday morning.

River flooding will continue along portions of area rivers, along with the potential for ice jam flooding.
