Subject: Change to flood impact categories on the Illinois River at Ottawa, Illinois
Effective April 1, 2019, flood impact categories for the Illinois River at Ottawa, Illinois, (NWS identifier OTWI2) will change. Flood impact categories are set for this gauge based upon the river reach extending from approximately Heritage Harbor east of Ottawa downstream to Starved Rock Lock and Dam. These changes are in response to recent mitigation activities which removed structures and critical infrastructure from the floodplain. These changes were coordinated with representatives from the city of Ottawa and the LaSalle County Emergency Management Agency.
Moderate flood stage will change from 466.0 feet to 467.0 feet. Major flood stage will change from 469.0 feet to 471.0 feet.
No changes are being made to the action stage of 461.0 feet or the minor flood stage of 463.0 feet. River forecasts will continue to be issued when this location has reached, or is expected to reach, action stage.
Forecast and warning information is available from the NOAA/NWS Chicago web page at weather.gov/chicago as well as the NOAA/NWS Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS) web page at water.weather.gov.
