Special Weather Statement for McHenry Co., IL

WWUS83 KLOT 292033 SPSLOT

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville IL 233 PM CST Tue Jan 29 2019

Winnebago-Boone-McHenry-Lake IL-Ogle-Lee-DeKalb-Kane-DuPage-Cook- La Salle-Kendall-Grundy-Will-Kankakee-Livingston-Iroquois-Ford- Lake IN-Porter-Newton-Jasper-Benton- Including the cities of Rockford, Belvidere, Woodstock, Waukegan, Oregon, Dixon, DeKalb, Aurora, Elgin, Wheaton, Chicago, Ottawa, Oswego, Morris, Joliet, Kankakee, Pontiac, Watseka, Paxton, Gary, Valparaiso, Morocco, Rensselaer, and Fowler 233 PM CST Tue Jan 29 2019 /333 PM EST Tue Jan 29 2019/

…Snow showers and areas of Blowing and Drifting Snow Likely This Afternoon, more blowing snow again overnight…

Snow showers combined with westerly wind gusts to 35 or 40 mph along with fresh dry snow cover has resulted blowing and drifting snow. Visibility has been reduced to 1 mile in spots, though some areas have observed near blizzard conditions with visibility to one quarter mile or less. These blizzard like conditions will not be widespread, and will be favored in open areas, but expect widely varying visibility this afternoon when wind gusts increase or a shower moves in.

Allow extra travel time and keep a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you, as roads could become snow covered from the blowing snow and visibility could sharply change.

When the bitter cold air arrives overnight, another surge of wind will likely create areas of blowing snow.

…Nearly Two Weeks of Daily Snow in Chicago…

The robust winter pattern entrenched over the area this week is not only characterized by the bitter cold but also the frequency of snow in advance of and during it. In fact, 13 consecutive days from January 17 through today, the 29th, have had at least a trace of snow at Chicago (O'Hare). During that time through 6 am today, 14.7 inches of snow have fell at Chicago.

There have been five other times in the Chicago period of record since 1884 where at least some snow occurred on 13 consecutive days. The last time was during the harsh 1978-1979 winter. From November 26-December 8, 1978 there were 13 straight days with at least a trace of snow. That stretch had 23.5 inches of snow.

The other stretches were February 19-March 3, 1947 (13 days), January 20-February 1, 1951 (13 days), February 9-26, 1960 (18 days), and December 18 1961-January 2, 1962 (16 days).

There is the possibility that Chicago has a little light snow after midnight on Wednesday morning, and then again Thursday night to continue this impressive daily snowfall stretch.
