PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL 1000 AM CST THU MAR 7 2019
…Severe Thunderstorm Safety…
Severe thunderstorms pose a threat to life and property. They produce damaging downburst winds of around 60 mph or greater, and or large destructive hail, one inch in diameter or greater. Flooding rains, frequent cloud to ground lightning, and tornadoes are also possible in severe thunderstorms.
A severe thunderstorm watch means severe thunderstorms are possible in the next few hours and to be prepared.
A severe thunderstorm warning means a thunderstorm capable of causing damage and injury has been sighted or detected by radar. Go indoors and stay away from windows. Heading into the basement or the lower level is encouraged as some storms have winds as strong as tornadoes and some can intensify rapidly and produce a tornado.
On August 2nd 2015, severe thunderstorms moved across northeast Illinois and produced a swath of large hail and wind damage from Dekalb to Evanston. One person was killed and three were injured seriously from wind damage with these storms. When thunder roars, go indoors.
