Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL

Mesoscale Discussion 1315
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0138 PM CDT Sun Jun 30 2019

Areas affected...IL

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 466...

Valid 301838Z - 302045Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 466
continues.

SUMMARY...Severe threat will spread south across ww466 over the next
several hours. Damaging winds remain the primary threat.

DISCUSSION...Long-lived MCS that developed over northern MN/WI has
progressed into northern IL where boundary-layer heating appears to
be aiding renewed updraft development along/ahead of the leading
squall line. 18z ILX sounding exhibited significant warming at 700mb
with notable CINH still present early this afternoon. However,
satellite imagery suggests an expanding boundary-layer cu field with
deepening thermals along a boundary that is draped from
south-central IN into north-central IL ahead of the MCS. This
corridor of cumulus is the most likely path of propagation for the
MCS as it spreads southeast. Additionally, winds have recently
gusted to 55kt at KRFD and this is further evidence that the MCS has
likely matured to the point it will continue well into the late
afternoon.

Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL

<pre>ACUS11 KWNS 272318
SWOMCD

Mesoscale Discussion 1278
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0617 PM CDT Thu Jun 27 2019

Areas affected...eastern Wisconsin...northeast Illinois...southwest
Michigan...northwest Indiana

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 455...

Valid 272317Z - 280115Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 455
continues.

SUMMARY...The severe threat continues across eastern portions of
WW455 in far eastern Wisconsin and northeast Illinois with severe
wind as the primary threat. Strong/severe storms may move out of the
watch across portions of eastern Lake Michigan, southwest Michigan,
northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana.

DISCUSSION...A line of thunderstorms capable of producing severe
wind continues to move eastward across far eastern Wisconsin and
northeast Illinois. Norther portions of the line are beginning to
weaken as storms encounter weaker instability while the southern
portion continues to develop new storms amid MLCAPE of 1500-2000
J/kg. These storms will likely continue until sunset taking
advantage of the insolation driven instability and steep low-level
lapse rates in the area.

The low-level jet will be stronger farther west, which will limit
the ability for the storms to continue into the evening across this
area. However, the southern part of the line will likely continue to
be strong/severe across southern Lake Michigan and northeast
Illinois and may move into portions of southwest Michigan and
northwest Indiana later this evening. Convective trends will
continued to be monitored for a possible watch expansion/extension
or if a new watch may be needed.

Areas affected...East-Central/Southeastern WI...Northern IL

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 453...

Valid 272027Z - 272200Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 453
continues.

SUMMARY...Threat for damaging wind gusts continues across Severe
Thunderstorm Watch 453. This threat is expected to extend outside of
the watch and a new watch will be needed across portions of
southeastern WI and northern IL.

DISCUSSION...Organized convective line continues moving
eastward/southeastward at 35 kt. Several strong gusts have been
measured over the past hour, include a 48 kt gust LNR. Overall
convective structure has become a bit less organized but the
downstream air mass remain supportive of deep convection.
Expectation is for the MCS to continue eastward/southeastward for
the next few hours with a continued threat for damaging wind gusts.
Based on the current storm motion, the line is expected to reach the
edge of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 453 around 2100-2130Z. Given the
expectation of a continued severe threat, a downstream watch will be
needed for portions of southeastern WI and northern IL.
