The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a
Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for Poor Drainage Areas for… Lake County in northeastern Illinois… Northeastern De Kalb County in north central Illinois… Northern Winnebago County in north central Illinois… Northern Kane County in northeastern Illinois… McHenry County in northeastern Illinois… Northwestern Cook County in northeastern Illinois… Northeastern Boone County in north central Illinois…
Until 400 AM CDT
At 1231 AM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain occurring across portions of the advisory due to thunderstorms. This heavy rainfall will likely cause urban and small stream flooding. Overflowing poor drainage areas will result in minor flooding in the advisory area. Radar rainfall estimates indicate between 2 and 3 inches of rain has already fallen along and axis from north of Rochelle to near Marengo with these storms since last evening, and additional heavy rainfall is expected over parts of the area overnight.
Some locations that will experience flooding include… Rockford, Elgin, Waukegan, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Hoffman Estates, Buffalo Grove, Carpentersville, Wheeling, Northbrook, North Chicago, Gurnee, Mundelein, Algonquin, Highland Park, McHenry, Vernon Hills, Woodstock, Zion and Loves Park.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
