Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL

<pre>ACUS11 KWNS 262039
SWOMCD

Mesoscale Discussion 1008
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0339 PM CDT Fri Jun 26 2020

Areas affected...Southern Wisconsin...northern Illinois...northeast
Iowa

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 305...

Valid 262039Z - 262245Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 305
continues.

SUMMARY...The environment ahead of storm cluster in western WI has
gradually become more supportive of severe convection. Damaging wind
gusts will be the primary threat with isolated large hail possible
with any marginal supercells that can develop. The tornado threat
remains low with northeastern IL and adjacent southern WI exhibiting
the more favorable environment.

DISCUSSION...A recent increase in intensity has occurred with a
cluster of storms now in Grant County, WI. This has occurred as
temperatures have slowly warmed into the mid to upper 70s F to the
north of the outflow boundary across northern IL. With storms
beginning to congeal in western WI and a modestly improving airmass
downstream, storms should pose an increasing threat for mainly
damaging microbursts and perhaps isolated large hail. Should the
southern flank of the southwestern WI cluster develop southward,
that activity would pose the greatest severe risk given the more
buoyant airmass to the south. Along the outflow boundary itself,
development is also possible, though less certain, given the weak
MLCIN sampled by the 20Z DVN sounding. The tornado threat is still
anticipated to be low, but the most supportive environment exists
within northeastern IL and adjacent southern WI given the more
backed surface winds.

Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL

<pre>ACUS11 KWNS 261739
SWOMCD

Mesoscale Discussion 1006
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1238 PM CDT Fri Jun 26 2020

Areas affected...Northeastern Iowa...southeastern
Minnesota...southern Wisconsin...northern Illinois

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely

Valid 261738Z - 261945Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...80 percent

SUMMARY...Storm coverage and intensity should slowly increase this
afternoon as ares of cloud breaks allow for surface-based
destabilization. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be the
primary threats. A tornado or two will be possible, primarily in
southern WI/northern IL, as the airmass tries to destabilize near an
outflow boundary. A WW will likely be needed by 18-19Z.

DISCUSSION...A storm has recently initiated along the MN/IA border
roughly where an MCV is interacting with a differential heating
zone. Recent KDMX and KDVN VAD data shows around 50 kts of flow at 6
km associated with the MCV. Heating of a moist airmass--dewpoints
generally in the low 70s--may eventually support MLCAPE in the
neighborhood of 2000 J/kg. Storm coverage is expected to increase
this afternoon both near the MCV and along the differential heating
zone/outflow boundary into northern IL. A 17Z sounding at GRB
sampled 7 C/km mid-level lapse rates which, given modest effective
shear, should support organized convection capable of large hail and
damaging wind gusts. The most intense storms are likely near and
south of the outflow this afternoon. Storms farther north are likely
to be less severe given the amount of cloud cover limiting
destabilization. Some modest low-level hodograph size is expected
near the outflow boundary. Should the airmass recover more this
afternoon, the threat for a tornado or two would exist primarily in
southern WI and northern IL. Initial convection will tend to grow
upscale with time along with further linear development along the
advancing cold front to the west. A WW will likely be needed by
18-19Z.

Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL

<pre>ACUS11 KWNS 221748
SWOMCD

Mesoscale Discussion 0967
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1248 PM CDT Mon Jun 22 2020

Areas affected...much of Illinois and surrounding areas

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible

Valid 221748Z - 222015Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent

SUMMARY...Storms will increase in number through the afternoon, with
localized damaging wind gusts or marginally severe hail.

DISCUSSION...Surface analysis shows a low over eastern IA, ahead of
the midlevel trough. Heating continues over much of the region, with
the strongest instability south of a diffuse temperature gradient
from northern into central IL and eastern MO.

Winds aloft are not particularly strong, but ample instability,
increasing lift and no convective inhibition should lead to
scattered and possibly numerous storms throughout the rest of the
afternoon. Precipitable water in excess of 1.50" along with
steepening lapse rates should support localized severe downbursts,
along with marginally severe hail in the strongest cores. Storms
will be focused along the diffuse front over IL, and may increase
along the cold front developing later today out of IA and MO.
