Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL

SWOMCD
Mesoscale Discussion 1550
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0458 PM CDT Sat Jul 20 2019
Areas affected...Northern Illinois
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 532...
Valid 202158Z - 202300Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 532
continues.
SUMMARY...The greatest severe weather threat remains along the
Illinois lake shore in WW 532.
DISCUSSION...The severe threat has likely waned in the near term in
western portions of severe thunderstorm watch 532. The primary
severe threat is now along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Illinois
where there are ongoing storms and additional development is
expected. Storms continue to develop over the convectively enhanced
cold pool in the southern Great Lakes. Given the extreme instability
(4000+ MUCAPE and steep lapse rate environment (7.5 to 8 C/km),
these storms will continue to pose a threat for both large hail and
damaging winds despite only marginal shear (~25 kts). Expect new
development to continue on the southern and western flank as the
outflow boundaries continue to sag south. This will lead to storms
likely impacting downtown Chicago within the hour. Eventually, the
outflow boundary will likely move far enough south into a more
capped environment which should limit additional development south
of Cook county.

Mesoscale Discussion for McHenry Co., IL
<pre>ACUS11 KWNS 201900
SWOMCD
Mesoscale Discussion 1546
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0159 PM CDT Sat Jul 20 2019
Areas affected...Portions of northern Illinois and Chicagoland Area
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible
Valid 201859Z - 202100Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent
SUMMARY...As thunderstorms/outflow near northern Illinois, intense
convection is possible given the extreme buoyancy in the area.
Uncertainty remains as to how far south ongoing/newly developing
convection will push into northern Illinois. A WW is possible should
convective trends become more clear.
DISCUSSION...A relatively narrow corridor of undisturbed airmass
remains in far southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
Temperatures have risen into the upper 80s F to low 90s F with
dewpoints holding in the upper 70s F. Two ongoing linear segments in
southwestern and southeastern Wisconsin will likely continue to sag
slowly southward with time. Given the extreme buoyancy -- MLCAPE of
4000+ J/kg -- intense convection is possible with damaging winds
being the primary threat. With the low-level shear vector oriented
nearly parallel to the outflow, it is uncertain how much development
will occur southward into Illinois. However, HCRs are currently
visible on visible satellite imagery in northeastern Illinois. Even
subtle lift from the outflow boundary may allow parcels to reach
their LFC. A WW is possible should trends reveal convection is more
likely.

...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT
SATURDAY...
* HIGH TEMPERATURES...93 to 95 degrees.
* MAXIMUM HEAT INDICES...Around 110 degrees.
* IMPACTS...The cumulative effects of temperatures and heat
index values this high could lead to heat related illnesses
with prolonged exposure. Those without air conditioning,
elderly, small children, and pets are especially susceptible.
Plan ahead. Have a cool place to shelter from the heat. Avoid
outdoor activity, especially strenuous ones, during the peak
heating times of the day.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Take extra precautions...if you work or spend time outside. When
possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work...the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency...call 9 1 1.
An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous
situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of
fluids...stay in an air-conditioned room...stay out of the sun...
and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in
vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during
warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal
temperatures in a matter of minutes.
