  • Until 645 AM CDT Thursday

  • At 935 PM CDT, emergency management officials reported flooding in Addison in DuPage County, in an area from Hoffman Estates to Barrington in northwest Cook County, and other locations in Kane and Kendal Counties. Three to four and half inches of rain have already fallen. While heavy rain has ended and not all areas will have continued flooding , flooding continues on numerous area roadways, particularly on the west side of Addison, and will continue into the overnight hours.

  • Some locations that will experience flooding include… Aurora, Joliet, Elgin, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Palatine, Mount Prospect, Wheaton, Hoffman Estates, Barrington, Carol Stream, Plainfield, Carpentersville, and Addison.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

At 735 PM CDT…TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS REPORTED FLOODING FROM THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE WARNED AREA. UP TO THREE AND A HALF INCHES OF RAIN HAVE ALREADY FALLEN IN SOME AREAS. ROADS CLOSED HAVE INCLUDED BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO ROUTE 14 IN BARRINGTON, ROSELLE AND HIGGINS ROAD IN HOFFMAN ESTATES, AND ARDMORE ROAD AT NORTH AVE IN VILLA PARK, AND THERE IS SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IN THE TOWN OF ADDISON.

While the heaviest rains have ended, considerable flooding is still ongoing across the warned area, and additional storms will affect areas mainly along and south of Interstate 88 through 845 pm CDT.

  • At 337 PM CDT, trained weather spotters reported heavy rain in along and to the east of Interstate 39 and across the far west and north suburbs of Chicago due to thunderstorms that will cause flooding. Up to two inches of rain have already fallen. Minor flooding has been reported in Elgin.

  • Some locations that will experience flooding include… Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Elgin, Waukegan, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Bolingbrook, Palatine, Mount Prospect, Wheaton, Hoffman Estates, Downers Grove, Lombard, Buffalo Grove, Carol Stream, Romeoville, Plainfield, Carpentersville and Wheeling.

…Funnel Clouds Possible Through this Afternoon…

Atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of funnel clouds. These funnel clouds normally only protrude a few hundred feet downward from the parent cloud, rotate or spin like a top, and last a few minutes before dissipating.

These funnel clouds rarely touch the ground and typically do not pose any sort of hazard. The atmospheric conditions that these funnel clouds develop in do not support strong, damaging tornadoes. However, on extremely rare occasions, these funnels can briefly touch the ground and produce very minimal, if any, damage.

If threatening weather approaches, move indoors to a place of safety. The National Weather Service will continue to closely monitor the situation. </pre>

The remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto will bring widespread rain to the outlook area this afternoon and evening. Periods of heavy rain are possible this afternoon, and the heavy rain may lead to localized flooding. The highest rainfall totals are expected along and east of Interstate 55.

There is a chance of thunderstorms through this evening. While the majority of storms will not be severe today, stronger storms may be capable of producing wind gusts over 40 MPH.

DISCUSSION:

The remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto will bring widespread rain to the outlook area today. Periods of heavy rain are possible this afternoon, and the heavy rain may lead to localized flooding. The highest rainfall totals are expected along and east of Interstate 55.

There is a chance of thunderstorms through this evening. While the majority of storms will not be severe today, stronger storms may be capable of producing wind gusts over 40 MPH.

An air pollution action day is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the unhealthy for sensitive groups category of the air quality index.

Active children and adults especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor activity.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has determined that an air pollution action day will be declared for the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area and is in effect until midnight CDT Tuesday night.

An air pollution action day is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the unhealthy for sensitive groups category of the air quality index.

Active children and adults especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Area residents are urged to reduce pollution levels. Air quality forecasts and tips on how you can reduce your emissions can be found at www.airnow.gov.
