DISCUSSION:

A period of light snow is likely for areas south of I-80 Sunday morning into the early afternoon. A dusting up to an inch of snow may fall in these areas.

Bitterly cold air for this time of year will return to the region later Sunday and persist through Tuesday. Wind chills late Sunday night into Monday morning may drop to around 20 below zero in northern Illinois.

These cold temperatures will create favorable conditions for river ice formation. Increased river ice may cause ice jams with little notice, especially along the Rock, Fox, and Kankakee Rivers.

…A Look Back at the Climate for Meteorological Winter (December -February) 2019 for Chicago and Rockford…

At Chicago, the average high temperature for the winter season was 33.7 degrees, which is 0.1 degree above the 1981 to 2010 average. The average low temperature was 19.7 degrees, which is 0.6 degrees above normal. The mean temperature for the season was 26.7 degrees, which is 0.3 degrees above normal.

A total of 8.09 inches of precipitation was recorded during this past winter, which is 2.32 inches above normal. There was a total of 28.6 inches of snow recorded at Chicago, which is 0.5 inches above normal.

Records established or tied during the winter months:

December: None

January:

  • Record daily snowfall of 5.0 inches on the 28th

  • Record daily lowest minimum temperature of -23 degrees on the 30th

  • Record daily lowest maximum temperature of -10 degrees on the 30th

  • Record daily lowest minimum temperature of -21 degrees on the 31st

At Chicago, the average high temperature was 34.0 degrees, which is 1.3 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 17.8 degrees, which is 2.3 degrees below normal. The average temperature for the month was 25.9 degrees which is 1.8 degrees below normal. During the month of February, 2.81 inches of precipitation were recorded, which is 1.02 inches above normal. 9.0 inches of snow were recorded, which is 0.1 inches below normal.

One record was set for Chicago for the month of February 2019:

  • Record daily highest minimum temperature of 39 degrees on the 3rd.

At Rockford, the average high temperature was 29.8 degrees, which is 4.4 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 14.3 degrees, which is 3.4 degrees below normal. The average temperature for the month was 22.1 degrees, which is 3.8 degrees below normal. During the month of February, 4.03 inches of precipitation were recorded, which is 2.62 inches above normal. 9.6 inches of snow were recorded, which is 1.9 inches above normal.
