…SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR NORTHEASTERN DE KALB…NORTHERN KANE AND SOUTHERN MCHENRY COUNTIES UNTIL 130 AM CDT…

At 1247 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Hampshire, or 7 miles southeast of Marengo, moving east at 20 mph.

Dime size hail and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include… Elgin, Carpentersville, Algonquin, McHenry, Woodstock, Marengo, Sleepy Hollow, East Dundee, Lake In The Hills, Huntley, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hampshire, Lakewood, Prairie Grove, Bull Valley, Trout Valley, Crystal Lake, Cary and Pingree Grove.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a

  • Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for Poor Drainage Areas for… Lake County in northeastern Illinois… Northeastern De Kalb County in north central Illinois… Northern Winnebago County in north central Illinois… Northern Kane County in northeastern Illinois… McHenry County in northeastern Illinois… Northwestern Cook County in northeastern Illinois… Northeastern Boone County in north central Illinois…

  • Until 400 AM CDT

  • At 1231 AM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain occurring across portions of the advisory due to thunderstorms. This heavy rainfall will likely cause urban and small stream flooding. Overflowing poor drainage areas will result in minor flooding in the advisory area. Radar rainfall estimates indicate between 2 and 3 inches of rain has already fallen along and axis from north of Rochelle to near Marengo with these storms since last evening, and additional heavy rainfall is expected over parts of the area overnight.

  • Some locations that will experience flooding include… Rockford, Elgin, Waukegan, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Hoffman Estates, Buffalo Grove, Carpentersville, Wheeling, Northbrook, North Chicago, Gurnee, Mundelein, Algonquin, Highland Park, McHenry, Vernon Hills, Woodstock, Zion and Loves Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

  • Until 7 AM CDT Sunday

  • Repeated rounds of thunderstorms producing very heavy rainfall may result in flash flooding.

  • Expect rises on area rivers and streams.

Elevated Thunderstorm Risk...with an associated:     Limited hail risk...up to quarter size.     Limited damaging wind risk...up to 60 mph.  Elevated Flooding Risk.

DISCUSSION…

Thunderstorms are expected to redevelop this evening and continue through the overnight. The highest thunderstorm coverage is likely to be primarily north of Interstate 80. All thunderstorms will be capable of producing frequent cloud to ground lightning. Torrential downpours could cause flooding. In addition, the strongest thunderstorms may be capable of producing damaging winds and or large hail.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Sunday through Friday.

Limited Severe Thunderstorm Risk.  Limited Flooding Risk.  Limited Excessive Heat Risk.
