DISCUSSION…

A line of thunderstorms will move east across the area late  this afternoon and early this evening. Some of these storms may  be capable of producing damaging wind gusts to 60 mph, and brief  heavy downpours. Locally heavy rainfall is possible if multiple  storm cells train over the same area, which could lead to minor  flooding.

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 253 continues.

SUMMARY…A line of storms moving across northern and central Illinois continues to pose a severe weather threat. The primary threat from these storms will be damaging winds.

DISCUSSION…The line of storms which has formed across northern and central Illinois has not produced much severe weather up to this point. 0 to 6 km shear (20 kts per the LOT 20Z VWP and 15 kts per the 19Z ILX sounding) remains weak, however, strong buoyancy (2500 to 3000 MLCAPE on RAP mesoanalysis) ahead of this line will continue to support some severe weather threat through the afternoon and into the evening. The primary severe threat will remain damaging wind gusts due to downward momentum transfer of 30 to 40 knots of flow around 1 km above the surface (LOT 20Z VWP).

…SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR NORTHEASTERN DE KALB…NORTHERN KANE AND MCHENRY COUNTIES UNTIL 430 PM CDT…

At 337 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Sharon to near Genoa to near Waterman. Movement was northeast at 35 mph.

Winds in excess of 45 mph will be possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include… Elgin, Carpentersville, Algonquin, McHenry, Woodstock, Sycamore, Harvard, Island Lake, Marengo, Genoa, Wonder Lake, Sleepy Hollow, East Dundee, Pistakee Highlands, DeKalb, Lake In The Hills, Huntley, West Dundee, Gilberts and Johnsburg.

Including the following interstates…

I-88 between mile markers 90 and 102.  I-90 between mile markers 23 and 47.

This includes… Northern Illinois University, Mchenry County College, Mchenry County Fairgrounds, and Moraine Hills State Park.

• TEMPERATURES…Highs in the lower to mid 90s.

• HEAT INDICES…Peak afternoon heat indices in the 105 to 110 degree range.

• IMPACTS…The cumulative effects of several days with very hot temperatures and oppressive humidity will lead to potentially hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Take extra precautions…if you work or spend time outside. When possible…reschedule strenuous activities. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures will occur. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids…stay in an air-conditioned room…stay out of the sun… and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Probability of Watch Issuance…80 percent

SUMMARY…Strong to severe storms are expected this afternoon across northern and central Illinois. The primary threat from these storms will be damaging wind gusts.

DISCUSSION…Temperatures have risen into the mid to upper 80s across much of Illinois with dewpoints in the upper 70s. This has led to MLCAPE around 2500 J/kg. Additional destabilization is expected through the afternoon as surface heating continues. Storms are expected to form along the cold front (currently in eastern Iowa and Eastern Missouri) and move eastward through the afternoon. Flow is relatively weak on the ILX 12Z sounding, however, low-level flow is forecast to increase to 35 to 40 knots by mid-afternoon. This will lead to a marginal shear environment with effective shear around 25 to 30 knots with most of this shear focused in the lowest 1 to 2 km. Nearly parallel orientation of the cold front to the deeper level flow will limit a greater severe weather threat, however, more robust updrafts could mix down stronger winds, posing a damaging wind threat through the afternoon. The threat will be maximized with any bowing segments which can orient more normal to the low-level flow and accelerate northeastward. A severe thunderstorm watch is likely in the next hour or two to cover this severe wind threat.
